Max Verstappens late race radio message draws ire of Formula 1 fans

Two-time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen is making a mockery of the 2023 season.

The Red Bull megastar won his eighth straight race of the season after storming to victory during the Beligum Grand Prix.

During the Austrian Grand Prix, Verstappen was more than 20 seconds clear of second placed Charles Leclerc when he convinced the team to allow a late race pit stop.

Verstappen emerged still in front and grabbed the fastest lap while crossing the line five seconds clear of his Ferrari rival.

The move didn't sit well with some fans who called out the star driver over the decision.

Not content with monster lead around the famous Spa-Francorchamps track, Verstappen wanted to do it again.

Only this time he was quickly shut down by race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase who wasn’t going to entertain the move.

“I could also push on and we another stop? A little bit of pitstop training," Verstappen cheekily said.

Lambiase responded: "No. Not this time.”

Fans however weren’t impressed by the radio message and blasted Verstappen over the disrespect he’s blatantly flaunting over the grid.

One user wrote: “This is why I’m finding a hard time to find an iota of liking to Max. Funny trolling for his supporters, mildly insulting to the competition.”

Another wrote: “Had enough of this guy now.”

A third wrote: “He’s mocking it at this point.”

Another fan added: “Max is so much faster he is legitimately trolling everyone.”

Red Bull’s dominance shows no signs of letting up with the team having won the opening 12 races of the season.

Verstappen can equal the all-time consecutive race win record, set by Sebastian Vettel in 2013, if he secures the victory during the Dutch Grand Prix.

Red Bull’s win in Belgium saw them claim the record for most victories from the beginning of a single season, eclipsing McLaren’s 11 race win record set back in 1988.

The Dutch star was happy with how his race unfolded after moving clear of his rivals and taking another chequered flag.

“I knew that we had a great car and it was just about surviving turn one. I could see it getting really tight so I was just going to stay out of that and it worked out,” Verstappen said.

“From there onwards we made the right overtakes and moves. I got a bit stuck in a DRS train at the start but once that cleared I could do my own pace. Again, really enjoyable.

“I did slow down (after the radio message). We look at the numbers, we look at the wear of the tyre and this track is super hard on the tyre so you don’t want to do any unnecessary things and that’s what we did until the end.”
