Davis Files : Happy Valley Preview - 26th April 2023

Brett Davis provides exclusive preview of Happy Valley races.

Rail - C+3 Course

Race 1

#10 HANG'S CHOICE has hit the line like a runner ready to win at his past two outings and it should be third time lucky. A good draw, familiar jockey and consistent honest approach are all that's required at this level to win and he fits that bill. Nevertheless, going out and getting it done is often the biggest hurdle but there's no doubt he's primed, and ready to rock and roll.
#4 THETA HEDGE has gracefully dropped back into class 5 company following a reasonable seasons work to this point. He's well exposed and clearly better suited to this easier class of race with his only win accumulated in this grade. With the blinkers back on and an inside draw he's rated amongst the winning hopes.
#1 HAPPY JAI JAI is another receiving the drop in class after a frustrating season so far. Winning three races last year bumped him up the handicap ladder to an all time high, and he's found it tough since then. Top weight and a sticky draw wont make it easy but he's got class on most of these.
#6 GLORIOUS LOVER has been honest without threatening since entering this grade and I'd be anticipating the same again. With a better draw and blinkers back on he should be finishing closer than he did last start. It's impossible to tip a thirty six start maiden to win, but he's racing well enough to entertain.
#5 RED IMPACT hasn't raced since December last year after suffering a heart irregularity. Between now and then, he's changed stables from Jamie Richards to David Hall and participated in five barrier trials. He's was well beaten in all but it can turn around on race night.

Race 9

#7 HOWDEEPISYOURLOVE continues his way up the rating mountain following a brave chase behind VICTOR THE WINNER at Sha Tin. That performance was his first at Hong Kong's headquarters but won't be his last, with bigger fish to fry their in time. John Size has placed him to perfection tonight with a one million HKD private purchase bonus up for grabs.
#10 ROCK YA HEART doesn't win out of turn but he's extremely talented and as honest as they come. He hasn't missed a top three finish his five past runs, and at this level that's a good earn. Drawn low with a claim, plus back up in trip reads well, so if there's any issues with the favourite he's the horse to be on.
#9 EASON makes the transition to class 2 following a hard fought win in quick time. This grade has been troublesome in the past but he's in a different zone right now. He'll need an outstanding performance to win and he's going good enough to bring it.
#5 ASTROLOGER has a bigger finish than most in this contest but requires things to suit. It's difficult to tip him with confidence but at the same time dangerous leaving him out. The speed map and potential race set up suggests he'll get things to suit, so I'd be wanting him in rather than out.
#2 COMPUTER PATCH has only been to Happy Valley once and on that occasion he drew the outside gate. He's dropped along way in the ratings over the past eighteen months and shouldn't be underestimated from this draw. With speed and strength to offer he's a definite include as he appears to be on his way back.
