Ocean Park three-year-old Ocean Beyond won Saturday’s Listed McMahon’s Dairy McKenzie Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday, upholding his perfect two from two record for Warrnambool trainer Daniel Bowman.

Ridden perfectly by Harry Coffey, Ocean Beyond sat outside the leader Deep Speed and poured the pressure on at the top of the straight to eventually get the better of that rival by half a length.

The in-form trainer has sent out eight winners in the month of November from 22 starters, with Ocean Beyond comfortably breaking his maiden at Geelong earlier in the month before easily handling the transition to stakes company.

“Since we gave him his first gallop we’ve known that he goes good. It was a matter of looking after him until his head was right. It was a good result today,” Bowman said.

“It mapped out perfectly to follow Luke Currie on Deep Speed across and whether we sat outside of him or behind him, it was just to follow wherever he went. It’s great to see Harry get this opportunity. He is up to it when the chance comes.

“I met Harry the same day I met my wife when he rode his first winner at Wycheproof a few years ago so it’s good to have him ride a Listed winner for us.”

Bowman sourced the youngster in New Zealand last year and said the immature three-year-old still had plenty of filling out to do and would go for a spell now.

“He was in the New Zealand Ready To Run Sale and I liked him at the sale,” Bowman said.

“His breeze-up wasn’t impressive, he did a lot wrong, but I liked the animal at the sale.

“He had a bit of a throat issue there so he was passed in. Waikato Stud were good enough, through my association with Mike Rennie and Mark Chittick, to take him home and get him over it for a couple of months.”

By Waikato Stud’s proven sire Ocean Park, Bowman went to $60,000 to purchase the now gelding after he was passed in at last year’s New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale where he was presented by Ohukia Lodge on behalf of Waikato Stud.

Out of the four-win Pins mare Frankly, the Chittick family’s Waikato Stud will offer a Savabeel half-brother to Ocean Beyond in Book 1 of the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sales at Karaka in January.
