Baker books Bowman for Tulloch

Cambridge trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman will renew their association with jockey Hugh Bowman in the Gr.2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

The partnership has tasted plenty of success in the past, including winning the Gr.1 Australian Oaks (2400m) and Gr.1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) with Bonneval (NZ) (Makfi).

Bowman will partner her brother The Frontman (NZ) (Makfi) in the Tulloch Stakes this weekend and he will be looking to extend the partnership’s success in the race, after winning the 2009 edition with the Baker-trained Harris Tweed (NZ) (Montjeu).

“We’ve had quite a bit luck together over the years going back to Lion Tamer in the (2010) Victoria Derby and even before then he rode Harris Tweed to win this race (Tulloch Stakes in 2009) before running second (behind Roman Emperor) in the Derby,” Baker told Racing.com.

The Frontman finished third in the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) earlier this month and Baker has a high opinion of the horse.

“He’s a proper horse and he comes off a very good run in the (New Zealand) Derby,” Baker said.

“He’s a very similar type to Bonneval, who won an Oaks and an Underwood.”

Bowman is also set to ride stablemate The Chosen One (NZ) (Savabeel) in the Gr.1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) on the same card.

“He tries hard and getting to the mile and a half (2400m) will really suit this horse,” Baker said.

“He was pretty good last start but just got left behind when they sprinted, but you could see him getting going again at the finish.

“He goes to the Sydney Cup which will be a good race for him after what he did in Melbourne. He ran a place in the Caulfield Cup and then ran really well (fourth) in a very strong Melbourne Cup.”
