The New Zealand-bred Rising Red was given the run of the race by jockey Corey Brown before coming away to win by 1-1/4 lengths to Maurus with a long head to Sedanzer in third place.

The Cranbourne based Trent Busuttin-Natalie Young training partnership has always held high hopes for Rising Red who ran second in Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) behind star galloper Gingernuts last year.

Rising Red hadn't won since scoring at Sandown 15 months ago but he showed he was on course for a win with a third in the Chairman's Handicap (2000m) at Doomben on May 12 at his first Queensland start.

"He hit the front there and was a bit unsettled. But today he put the field away in style," Busuttin said.

"I think he is starting to mature now to the level where he can win a Group race like the Brisbane Cup."
