Jockey Tommy Berry holds no fears about exciting New Zealand import New Universe coming back in distance at Rosehill on Saturday.

New Universe, who raced as Dark Universe in New Zealand for Chris Wood, was one of the star performers at Rosehill earlier this month when swooping from last to blow away 10 rivals over 1200 metres.

The manner of the win suggested that a rise in distance would be a logical progression however trainer Chris Waller has accepted to run the son of Darci Brahma in an 1100 metre contest this weekend.

Berry, who rode New Universe last start, believes the distance reversion is not a concern, in fact, quite the contrary.

"Not at all - it will be good for him actually," Berry said.

"He can go a bit keen in his races. He relaxed well last time but they went 100 miles an hour.

"They're not going to go any quicker over a shorter trip than they did the other day."

New Universe was one of the reasons why Berry decided to forego riding at the Doomben Cup meeting and remain in Sydney.

"I didn't have anything special in Queensland but I didn't look too hard to tell you the truth," Berry said.
"He gave me such a great feel last time, the feel of a horse that's definitely going to make stakes level without a problem.

"He probably won't get as far back in the smaller field time and I'll be surprised if he doesn't win quite convincingly.

"At the moment, he feels like a sprinter because to get him over a mile at this stage I think he could go a bit keen but he's only lightly raced and Chris is really good at getting his horses to switch off and get over further."

Waller has previously indicated a conservative approach with New Universe this preparation but a trip north to the Queensland carnival remains an option
