Tarissa Mitchell has enjoyed past success at Riccarton with her boutique team and she is making plans for a permanent move south.

The Cambridge horsewoman has had discussions with the Canterbury Jockey Club about the availability of stables and is hopeful of relocating in the spring.

“I’ve spoken with (chief executive) Tim Mills about stabling and I’ve been looking at properties as well,” Mitchell said.

“I haven’t sold my own place yet, a few people have been looking privately so there’s no rush at this stage. Hopefully, we can be there around September.

“I enjoy it down there and we feel it is the right thing to do. My partner Carl is a builder and he’s from Christchurch.”

Mitchell had made her mark at Riccarton, producing Irish Call to win four races there and Call Me Royal has also been successful on the South Island’s premier course.

The stablemates will make the move later in the year with the former about to return to work while Call Me Royal stepped out over ground for the first time this preparation at Hastings last Saturday and dead-heated for second in the open handicap.

“He went really well and he’s a great stayer,” Mitchell said. “We targeted the New Zealand Cup with him last year, but it didn’t go to plan.

“The tracks were a bit firm and he’s had a tendon issue.”

Going one better than Call Me Royal at Hawke’s Bay was Akoya Pearl, who provided Mitchell with a memorable result as she also co-bred and owns the Civics filly.

“It’s special when you’ve had them for so long,” she said. “I was going to turn her out for three weeks and get her ready for Cup week at Riccarton, but she’s bouncing around so we might carry on.”
