Rosewood’s latest success has earned her a return to black type company.

The four-year-old will step up in grade next time out following a game performance to win Saturday’s New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Pearl Series Race (1400m) at Trentham.

“As long as she comes through this well, we’ll look at the stakes race at Wanganui – it should suit her,” owner-trainer Marilyn Paewai said, referring to next weekend’s Listed Ag Challenge Stakes (1600m).

Third in the Gr.3 Boehringer Metric Mile (1600m) last preparation, Rosewood had won trials either side of an unplaced run when resuming at Te Rapa last month.

“I just had a few little issues with her. She had a stone bruise and got over that and I knew she was well for today,” Paewai said.

She had been bullish on Rosewood’s chances, but admitted to pre-race concern about the Redwood mare carrying 59kg.

“I was reasonably confident until I got the saddle. She’s not very big and I was worried about the weight, but she’s always good in the mud.”

Rosewood sat off the pace before apprentice Wiremu Pinn improved near the turn and strode to the front 300m from home. They then drew out to score by three lengths.

“That’s broken her hoodoo – that’s the first race she’s won other than at New Plymouth,” Paewai said. “She’s the best horse I’ve ever had.”

Sophia Magia raced near the pace and boxed on for second ahead of Do Ya, who raced in the trail.
