Cambridge trainer Stephen Marsh is hoping the addition of blinkers will help his filly Pierrocity take a step to a possible Queensland trip this weekend.

Pierrocity has won and been twice placed with the aid of sidewinkers, but Marsh believes he needs to take the next step to get the best out of the daughter of Pierro in the Gr.2 Valachi Downs Championship Stakes (2100m) at Pukekohe.

“I’m sure the blinkers will help,” he said. “She’s got to run a good race to warrant going to Australia.”

Pierrocity cleared maiden ranks over 1600 metres at Te Rapa last October then despite being thrown in the deep end in the Gr.1 Gavelhouse.com NZ 1000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton she performed creditably for sixth.

She was freshened after the Christchurch assignment and second-up she shaped well when runner-up at Matamata over 1600m then jumped to 2100m last time when second to Azaboy at Pukekohe.

“I’m just a bit worried about the track on Saturday. Hopefully it doesn’t get too sticky for her,” Marsh said.

Meanwhile, Marsh is pleased with the progress of Thee Auld Floozie since her second to Miss Wilson in the Gr.1 Fiber Fresh NZ Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1600m) at Te Aroha a fortnight ago.

“She’ll run in the Travis Stakes at Te Rapa and hopefully she gets a good track,” he said. “That could be it for her this season.”
