While Te Akau Shark has been grabbing the headlines this spring, trainer Jamie Richards believes he has unearthed another potential star for the future in the form of Remington.

The four-year-old son of Darci Brahma has never been out of the money in his eight starts to date, winning four of those including three this spring.

“He has been the real find of the (New Zealand Cup) carnival for us,” Richards said.

“He went down there just a lowly rated horse that had some nice form in some weaker company in the Autumn but he really stepped up to perform with distinction in the carnival.”

Purchased for $75,000 out of Pencarrow Stud’s 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock Select Yearling Sale draft by Te Akau principal David Ellis, Remington could follow in the same steps as his famous stablemate next year.

“He has travelled home and like Te Akau Shark he will head out to Te Akau Stud for a break and he might be a horse we can get ready for the Coupland’s next year,” Richards said.

“I think we will just take him along quietly, he has had four or five runs down there in the South Island so we will look to give him three or four weeks off and then get him ready for a campaign.

“There are no real plans yet, it is just a case of picking the right races to keep his confidence up before we get too carried away.”
