A quiet trial at Avondale on Tuesday has Cambridge trainer Stephen Marsh contemplating a Melbourne trip for the 2016 Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) winner Ugo Foscolo.

Making his first public appearance since winning at Te Rapa in April, Ugo Foscolo was under a hold by rider Troy Harris over the final stages of his 1000m trial after trailing then leading mid-way.

“Troy was rapt with his run,” Marsh said. “It was such a wet track and we didn’t want him having a hard run and he had as soft a run as possible.

“He’ll go to Ruakaka for an open 1200m and we could then look at getting him to Melbourne. It’s an option, but we have to see how he does first.”

Stablemate Bevan Street also put himself on a path to a return to racing at Ruakaka with his effort for second to Mongolian Marshal in another open 1000m trial.

“He went enormous,” Marsh said. “And I was really happy with the run of Zappeur for third in the same trial.”
