Tavistock three-year-old filly Thornery has been earmarked as one to watch by co-trainer Robert Wellwood after her 840m trial win at Te Teko earlier this month.

Wellwood, who trains the filly in partnership with Roger James, has been pleased with her progress and said she could be heading down an Oaks path later this season.

“She is a really nice classic type of filly and her trial win at Te Teko was massive,” he said.

“She’s definitely going to be a horse who is better with time. She is tagged for the later three-year-old fillies races, including the Oaks.

“We were pleased with her at home, but she probably needed the trial to develop her ringcraft. We were pleasantly surprised with just how well she did for a first outing.”
