Stakes winner Magnum made a winning return to the track at Ruakaka on Saturday when taking out the Harcourts Whangarei (1200m) and more black-type could be in-store for the Per Incanto gelding when he heads to Hastings next month.

The Lauren Brennan-trained six-year-old was brave when winning by a head over Rikki Tikki Tavi on Saturday and will now be set for a tilt at the Gr.3 Red Badge Spring Sprint (1400m) on the final day of the Hawke’s Bay spring carnival.

“I thought his run on Saturday was quite impressive first-up,” Brennan said.

“I thought he needed the run and was still a bit fat, but he certainly tried very hard and fought to the line, so he’s still got that fight in him.

“He’s pulled up really well since Saturday. He’s happy and sound and he’s eating up, I couldn’t be happier.

“We’ll probably head to the Red Badge 1400m with him on Livamol Classic day. We’ll see how things go before then, whether we have a jump out in-between I am not sure.”
