Te Toro Pearl’s effort to extend her winning streak to four at New Plymouth on Saturday further emphasised the filly’s talent and determination.

The exciting three-year-old overcame a tough run in the Seaton Park 1400m to prevail and leave trainer Jon Miller shaking his head.

“She’s gone back and had to work really hard for it,” he said.

“She had to take off at the 600m and was out wide and then hit the front – I’m a bit blown away by her.”

Te Toro Pearl finished sixth on debut at Te Aroha in April and the daughter of Bullbars has since remained unbeaten.

“It’s hard to say what we do next, I’ll get her home and see how she comes through the race,” Miller said.

“We could come back here or perhaps look at Hawke’s Bay.”

A return to New Plymouth would be tempting, given that Te Toro Pearl has now won both of her starts on the course.

Rider Michael Coleman opted to drop to the back of the field from the outside gate before he urged Te Toro Pearl forward and, after challenging on the turn, she was gallant in the run home to deny Cossack Warrior and Ruffy Rahtwo.

Miller was also pleased with stablemate Waipipi Lad’s performance to run fourth behind Strolling Vagabond in the Sinclair Electrical & Refrigeration Handicap (1800m).

“He’s a good old fellow and earned his fee again,” he said. “The track didn’t really suit him. I was going to run him at Te Rapa, but they canned the race.”
