Stacey Dougan’s winter of content with Charlie Horse continued at New Plymouth.

The Opaki trainer produced the progressive son of Zacinto to effortlessly win the MD Brown Plumbing 1800m on Saturday off the back of a Wanganui victory.

Charlie Horse also returned a cheque in each of his other five appearances this campaign.

“He’s honest and always tries really hard,” Dougan said. “I thought he’d go another good race.

“The penny has dropped with him and he might be a pretty fair horse.”

Charlie Horse settled behind the pace on the fence and rider Dylan Turner was able to angle off the fence before the turn. The four-year-old finished strongly to win going away.

“He’s much better ridden in behind,” Dougan said. “We tried him in front earlier and it didn’t work out.”

Charlie Horse won by two and three-quarter lengths while Wonderful Barbie, who was bidding for her third successive win, boxed on well to finish runner-up.
