Gifted Foxton mare Red Sierra isn’t finding her lack of size any barrier to success.

The diminutive daughter of Redwood has been in grand touch this preparation and at Hastings on Saturday she was an emphatic winner of the Animal Health Direct Handicap (1400m).

“She’s doing everything right, she’s quite exciting for a little thing,” said David Haworth, who trains with his daughter Emma.

Red Sierra was a first-up winner at Wanganui earlier this month and then gave a strong account of herself when third in an open handicap at Hawera.

At Hawke’s Bay, the four-year-old was back in Rating 75 company and she disposed of them easily with a powerful late run from back in the field under stable apprentice Charlotte O’Beirne.

“Charlotte has ridden her really well, I’m very pleased for her and the owners,” Haworth said.

O’Beirne has been making the most of her opportunities since transferring to the Haworth’s stable.
“I’m very, very fortunate and David and Emma have been fantastic to me,” the 24-year-old said.

She has now won twice on Red Sierra, who may head south for the Grand National carnival at Riccarton in August.

“She tries so hard and you couldn’t ask any more of her,” O’Beirne said.

“She gets back and appreciates it when they go hard early. She’s not one you can huddle too much at the start.”

Red Sierra won by a widening two and a-quarter lengths from Big Ben and Petite En Jeu, who led turning for home.
