Kelvin Tyler’s main worry this week with The Energizer was securing a jockey for the seven-year-old at Wingatui on Friday.

The Riverton trainer didn’t expect any issues in that area, given the jumper’s form credentials for The Virginia Hutchinson Memorial (2750m).

“I texted and rang a few riders, but couldn’t get anyone – I thought they would have been jumping out of trees to get on him,” Tyler said.

However, an approach from the Wanganui-based Hana Bognuda settled the issue.

“She was the only one that rang me up for the ride,” Tyler said.

Bognuda is now in prime position to post her first winner as The Energizer is at the top of his game and is expected to prove a handful for his rivals.

The son of Shinko King, who is being aimed at next month’s Hospitality New Zealand Canterbury Grand National Hurdles (4200m), won over fences at Wingatui two runs back before finishing runner-up at Timaru.

“He’s going really well and I expect him to go close, he’d probably have to fall over to get beaten but it’s a hurdle race and anything can happen,” Tyler said.

“He is a safe jumper though and he’s done everything right. He’s an ideal hurdler.”

Tyler has yet to confirm plans for The Energizer after Wingatui and a trip north to Trentham for the Wellington Hurdles (3400m) hasn’t been completely ruled out.

“He’ll either go to Timaru or Wellington, probably Timaru is more likely because I don’t want to bottom him out before the National,” he said.
