Quality galloper Lewis Caroll has finally succumbed to lingering knee issues and the decision has been made to retire the five-year-old son of Darci Brahma.

“It’s common knowledge his entire career that he failed the vet for Hong Kong,” breeder, part-owner and trainer Ngaire Fraser said.

“My daughter Wendy has done an amazing job looking after him, but after Whangarei we x-rayed him and pulled the pin. His knees have got too bad to go on so we retired him.

“My daughter is very sad because she’s worked so hard on him, but I said we have got to remember the good times.

“He was a very talented horse. We won five races with him (and nearly $100,000 in stakes). The vet said he had to be very brave to do what he did when you look at the x-rays.”

Lewis Caroll was the only horse Fraser had in work and she said she would like to find a nice home for him before reevaluating her future training career.

“It would be wonderful if we could find him a nice home because he is a kind horse and not being big would perhaps suit a lot of people that just want a nice horse to hack around,” she said.

“He was my only horse in work. We had hoped that we were going to get another season out of him but we were always aware that this could happen.

“We’ll just take a deep breath and review the situation. It’s been my whole life really.”
