The recently gelded Mofara has cleared maiden company after recording his first victory in the H R Fisken & Sons Ltd 1200 at Te Teko on Friday, but needed the entire length of the straight for the win.

The Emma-Lee and David Browne-trained runner settled off the pace before jockey Vinnie Colgan made his move at the turn of the straight. The three-year-old Iffraaj gelding closed late to get the bob at the line over Goodnight Irene.

“He is a better horse coming from the back,” Emma-Lee Browne said. “In his first start he did that in the Wakefield and we were really happy with him and then he got a bit keen, but he travelled beautifully today for Vinnie, so I am very happy.

“We’ve had a bit of a frustrating year with him. A few things went wrong and then we gelded him. He’s been knocking on the door and has shown a lot of ability so hopefully with the win today he can go on with it.”
