David and Emma Haworth are keen to head south later in the winter with Red Sierra.

Riccarton plan for Red Sierra - Race Images

The Foxton-based father and daughter team produced the daughter of Redwood to add to her travelling fund when she triumphantly returned from a break at Wanganui on Saturday.

Red Sierra finished strongly from well back in the field to trounce her Rating 65 rivals in the hands of stable apprentice Charlotte O’Beirne.

“She’s a pretty good mare. She’s very small and she’s the type that if she gets a knock in the running she gets a bit timid among other horses,” Emma Haworth said.

“She has to be ridden back and then get out into the open, Charlotte did a very good job.”

The Grand National carnival at Riccarton is the long-term goal for Red Sierra.

“That’s our plan at this stage. I’m not exactly sure what races, we’ll give her a couple more runs before then and we’ll see where we’re at.”

The diminutive four-year-old has showed a strong preference for rain-affected going with three wins now from nine appearances.

“We gave her a few starts during the summer, but she just couldn’t quicken on the firmer tracks so we put her out,” Haworth said.

Also pencilled in for the Christchurch venture is the Nom du Jeu gelding Hand It To Jonesy.

“We won’t have many in during the winter, most of them are out spelling now,” Haworth said.

Hand It To Jonesy made strong progress during his autumn campaign with wins over ground at Awapuni and Tauherenikau from his last two starts.
