Peter McKenzie isn’t planning too far ahead with his wet-track performer Our Bandit.

“There were two or three races we intended to run him in last winter, but they were cancelled so we’ll just see what happens this time around,” the Levin trainer said.

Our Bandit will return from a seven-month break to open his campaign at Trentham on Saturday in The Hanley Formula Autumn Sprint Championship Final (1200m).

“It’s been a while, but I’m very happy with the way he’s coming up,” McKenzie said.

Our Bandit has had the benefit of a 1200m trial at Waverley earlier this month in the hands of Tony Allan, who will take the ride on Saturday.

“He’s ready to run and go pretty well, Tony has been riding him in his work,” McKenzie said.

Our Bandit won five races last year and finished fourth in the Gr.3 Metric Mile (1600m). He was put aside after failing to place on a dead track behind Hiflyer in the Gr.3 Thompson Mile (1600m) in October.

“It’s a pretty smart field on Saturday and it’s a case of seeing how he measures up against the better ones,” McKenzie said.

In Our Bandit’s favour at the weekend is his affinity with Trentham – he has won four races there on rain-affected going including an open handicap success off the back of a Rating 75 victory.
