The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman training juggernaut rolled on at Te Rapa on Saturday when promising filly Power O’Hata scored in the Distinction Hamilton Hotel 1200.

The Power filly had downed a quality line-up in the Gr.3 Cambridge Breeders Stakes (1200m) at her last appearance and faced several of the same rivals in Saturday’s three-year-old contest. Sent out a warm favourite, Power O’Hata enjoyed a handy run close to the speed throughout before being angled wide to make her challenge on the home bend.

Despite sustaining a determined bid, the filly appeared to be in trouble with 200m to run as Malambo speared through on the inside of runners to establish a clear lead at that point. Power O’Hata refused to be denied with rider Matthew Cameron extracting the best out of her to master Malambo and claim victory on the line.

“She’s a pretty tough filly who has really strengthened up this time in after being quite weak early on,” said co-trainer Andrew Forsman.

“It had been hard to make ground up all day and when she got into that wide part of the track I was a little worried she might not be able to pick them up.

“She also tends to get her head on the side at times which is something we hope will iron out as she gets older but in the end she got the job done in what was a pretty good win.”

Forsman is undecided on the immediate future for the filly who he believes could extend her distance range next season.

“There’s not a lot around for her at the moment and I think you saw that she probably doesn’t want it any worse than the track she struck on the weekend,” he said.

“We will take a look at the programme, but we may back off her now and give her some time in the paddock before getting her ready for the spring.

“I think she could well get up to a mile in her next campaign as she tends to relax in her races, but time will tell on that one.”

The victory made in 116 wins for the partnership this season with Forsman keen to extend the mark in the coming weeks.

“We don’t have a massive winter team but we will still have some nice horses running in the next two months,” he said.

“Hopefully we can keep adding to our tally although it has been a wonderful season no matter what happens now.”

Forsman will miss some of the immediate action for the stable as he and his family are preparing to take a well-deserved holiday in Rarotonga later this week.
