New Zealand Bloodstock’s May Sale has gained momentum over recent years with more and more sale graduates, achieving success at the highest level.

This year, the sale will kick off with a bumper yearling section with 65 yearlings catalogued to set the tone for two solid days of selling on the 7th and 8th of May.

One of the leading vendors, Haunui Farm, will offer six yearlings as part of the sale, along with a draft of 23 weanlings and, a handful of mares will round out their May Sale draft.

“Buyers have had considerable success buying from the Haunui draft over a number of years,” said Haunui Farm’s Managing Director, Mark Chitty.

“Whether it be pinhooking weanlings or, purchasing mares in foal, we’ve enjoyed success across the board,” he said.

Recent success stories include pinhook results that saw weanlings purchased at the 2017 Karaka May Sale for $30,000 on sell for $110,000 and $200,000 at Karaka 2018 whilst race track success this season includes stakes Australian stakes winner So Far Sokool (NZ) (Showcasing) and Pendleton (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle) who was a $28,000 purchase out of Haunui’s 2014 draft.

New Zealand Oaks winners Jungle Rocket (NZ) (Jungle Pocket) – sold as a weanling – and Savaria (NZ) (Savabeel) – sold in utero – are other prime examples of the opportunities that abound at next week’s sale.

“The weanling market is going from strength to strength in Australasia and as I’ve always said, there is always plenty of opportunity in our draft for the discerning buyer,” said Chitty.

“We have yearlings and weanlings by nine different stallions inlcuding our proven sires Iffraaj and Showcasing along with Ferlax who has made a promising start with his first crop of two-year-olds producing a Karaka Million runner,” he said.

Among Haunui’s draft of weanlings is a half-sister to Gr.2 Travis Stakes runner-up China Star (NZ) (Chinese Dragon) by leading 2YO sire Showcasing, Lot 355 and, a duo of fillies by Tavistock (NZ) (Montjeu), one a close relation to Singapore Group One  winner Green Birdie – Lot 151 – and the other from the family of Champion 2YO O’Marilyn, Champion 3YO Headturner and Caulfield Guineas winner Anacheeva.

Haunui’s yearling draft features a good-looking Showcasing colt out of a daughter of Group One performer Clear Cut, Lot 21, whilst Lot 52 is an Iffraaj daughter of Not Surprized (NZ) (Danzero), a daughter of G1 winner Surprize Surprize (NZ) (Prized).

Among the mares in the draft is a rare opportunity to buy into the Haunui Farm foundation family through Lot 453, Medrano. A daughter of On The Rise, one dam fills the page and this last season alone the family has produced four stakes performers – Celebrity Dream, Matchbreaker, Caricature and Travymyfriend.
