Warm favourite Humble Pie’s inexperience was well and truly overshadowed at Riccarton by his natural talent.

The gelding had left the rest of the field struggling in his wake soon after straightening on Saturday before he shied and veered out sharply at the sight 100 metres off the post of the large infield television screen.

However, the Adrian and Harry Bull-trained son of Sakhee’s Secret was quickly brought under control again by rider Rosie Myers and they strolled away with the New Zealand Bloodstock 3YO by seven and three-quarter lengths.

“Obviously he’s still got a bit to learn,” she said. “He’s a bit cheeky, but he had plenty of petrol left in the tank.

“He just cruises along nicely and I don’t see any reason why he won’t go on with it.”

Humble Pie had been a trial winner last season before he was unplaced on debut at Otaki in June and earlier this month he went back to the trials at Waverley where he finished second.

His Hunterville connections elected to remove the blinkers at Riccarton and he jumped straight to the front. When Myers asked him for an effort 400 metres from home he lengthened stride to quickly be out on his own.

“He’s always worked well and I really like the horse,” Myers said.

The Foxwedge filly Ajay Tee ran on late to finish a distant second with Platinum Edition, who raced with the leader, weakened to third.
