In a perfect world, the capable mare Lucyinrio will be keeping the best of company in her first two appearances of a new campaign.

The sparingly-raced daughter of Captain Rio, who was Group placed during her last preparation, is making good progress toward a return to racing.

“She’s doing well and she had a gallop with Kawi at New Plymouth recently,” Opaki trainer Kylie Little said.

Plan A is for Lucyinrio to resume in the Gr.2 Lisa Chittick Foxbridge Plate at Te Rapa on August 19 and then on to the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy at Hawke’s Bay a fortnight later.

“She’ll have a trial and then hopefully she can get in the Foxbridge and she is nominated for the first two races at Hastings,” Little said.

Lucyinrio has won twice from 13 starts and in the autumn she showed her quality when third in the Gr.3 Westbury Classic behind Thee Auld Floozie and Mime.

The five-year-old was then turned out after she turned in a meritorious effort for eighth, beaten only three lengths from the winner Charmont in the Gr.1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes.

“She’s a lot more professional now, she was still learning the game before,” Little said. “She’s a big girl and she’s strengthened – she’s as wide as she is tall.”

Meanwhile, Lucyinrio’s stakes-placed stablemate Zartan is enjoying a break and he will return to prepare for a tilt at the Gr.3 Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup.

The winner of six races, he finished runner-up in the Listed Wanganui Cup last month.
