Tony Pike is more than happy with Morweka’s condition ahead of her engagement at Avondale on Wednesday, although he does have reservations about the underfoot conditions.

“I would have liked to have run her at Ruakaka last Saturday, but she drew the outside gate,” the Cambridge trainer said.

“She did run second at Avondale in March when it was heavy. They ran a bit over 1.13 that day and they’ll be running more like 1.18 this time.

“The track is a query, but apart from that she is going really well.”

Morweka has done nothing wrong in her two-start career as she won on debut on the course in February. She has been ridden both times by Vinnie Colgan, who will again take the reins in Wednesday’s Avondale Sunday Markets 1200.

The Showcasing three-year-old is raced by the Galloping Wekas Syndicate, who also race her talented stablemate Skyweka.

She has won five of her 18 starts and is currently on the easy list after failing to show her true form over a mile last time out.

“She was really disappointing at Te Rapa,” Pike said. “Her work had been super going into that and I thought she would go a big race.

“We just had to put it down to the ground – she’s run her worst races on soft or heavy tracks so she’s out for a month and then we’ll have a look at her in the spring.”
