Patient handling is bringing out the best in the late developer Sensible Princess.

The rising five-year-old has only been to the races six times, but three wins and two placings are testament to the success of the waiting tactics.

“Physically, she’s only just starting to mature now,” trainer Fraser Auret said. “After she won her first start last year she went quite shin sore so we’ve had to take her along very slowly.”

While the daughter of Street Sense has only raced on heavy going, she isn’t considered one dimensional by her connections.

“It’s just that the softer tracks have been more forgiving and as she gets older she should cope on better ground,” Auret said.

Sensible Princess produced a dominant performance to score at Wanganui last month and backed up a week later at Otaki where she again won in a canter.

“We’ve always had a lot of time for her, but to my eye she went to another level at Otaki,” Auret said.

“The start before she did a lot wrong and the way she quickened up the next time was a big buzz. She’s certainly very promising.”

The Marton horseman has no immediate plans for Sensible Princess, other than to add to her winning record.

“I’d like to keep her in her grades and hopefully continue to get her rating up, she’s only on a 71, so we can then have a go at some black type when the time is right,” he said.
