Kind handling is bringing out the best in the versatile stayer Wait A Sec, whose spring target is already set in stone.

The six-year-old has been in outstanding touch during his latest preparation which successfully concluded on his home track on Saturday when he made a winning open class debut in the Taradale Club Handicap.

“He’s going out for a quick spell now and when he comes back we’ll be getting him ready for the New Zealand Cup,” said Guy Lowry, who trains the son of Postponed with Grant Cullen.

He sat just off the pace for jockey Johnathan Parkes before he was urged to circle runners across the top. The gelding hit the front early in the run home and from that point he never looked under serious threat.

Last-start hurdle winner Zentangle stuck on gamely to take second money off the front-runner Zartan with Nashville making late ground for fourth.

The well-backed Thorn Prince was next in and unable to make an impression after giving away lengths with a slow start.

Wait A Sec has now won eight races, four of them in the last six weeks, on tracks ranging from good to heavy with Lowry putting the horse’s run of form down to time.

“We’ve been very patient with him and we’re getting the rewards now,” he said.

“He’s been doing a bit of farm work as well – we’ve been mixing it up and he’s enjoying it.”

Wait A Sec is owned by his Hastings breeder Ian Henderson, who races him in partnership with his Perth-based son Paul.
