Kawi's future quest for further elite level honours will be over the shorter trips.

Following the six-year-old's last-start fifth in the Gr.1 New Zealand Strakes at Ellerslie, trainer Allan Sharrock has all but dismissed the chances of Savabeel's best son making another appearance over ground.

"I doubt he'll ever run over 2000 metres again," he said. "The ride the other day was good, but he did have that wind operation last year and when the gap came at the 300 he had run out of oxygen.

"He's an explosive sprinter-miler so we'll be keeping him to 1200, 1400 and 1600 metre races."

The winner of six Group One events, Kawi is currently enjoying time in the paddock.

"He's out for six weeks and he'll be back later on and kick off at the Hawke's Bay carnival or in Melbourne," Sharrock said.

Meanwhile, the stable has two well-performed mares in Gypsy Fair and Art Deco making strong progress towards a return to racing.

"They are both coming up really well and we'll be looking to the fillies and mares' races with them," Sharrock said.

The Gr.3 Classic Cuisine Rotorua Stakes, the Listed Ag Challenge Stakes and the Listed Team Wealleans Tauranga Classic are among the suitable options.

Gypsy Fair closed her last campaign with victory in the Gr.3 Metric Mile at Awapuni while Art Deco went from a maiden victory to Rating 85 success during her last preparation.
