Bill Thurlow has followed the Gingernuts story as closely as anyone and he's not alone in his surprise at the three-year-old's rise to Australasian Group One glory.

The Waverley horseman purchased the New Zealand Derby and Rosehill Guineas winner for a modest price as a young horse and subsequently showed a decent profit when he sold him 18 months later.

"We bought him for $5000 as a weanling and then later put him through the Ready to Run Sale," Thurlow said.

The chestnut caught the eye of Te Akau principal David Ellis at Karaka in 2015 and he parted with $42,500 to secure the gelding.

"My daughters Jamie and Emma did two for the sale that year for the first time," Thurlow said.

"Gingernuts was one and the other was a Lope De Vega that didn't sell. He's still with us and he'll trial up soon.

"It's really interesting as Gingernuts didn't show that much as a young horse. He was well put together and he always looked like he would need time.

"He was by Iffraaj out of a five-win mare and he was cheap – those sorts of horses are always a chance."

The Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards-trained Gingernuts has made meteoric progress this season, so much so that his connections had to make a late payment to even get him in the Derby at Ellerslie.

As a weanling, the Goodwood Stud-bred Gingernuts was signed for on Thurlow's behalf by Cambridge bloodstock agent Phill Cataldo, who enjoyed a hugely satisfying day at Rosehill on Saturday.

He also purchased Shocking's son Antonio Giuseppe at Karaka while he brokered the private sale of the Roc de Cambes mare Consommateur.

Antonio Giuseppe broke his maiden for Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman before he joined Chris Waller's Sydney operation. He has won a further five races and on Saturday he finished a game fourth in the Gr.1 Ranvet Stakes.

Consommateur was runner-up in two trials when trained at Cambridge by the now Victorian-based pair of Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young before Cataldo purchased her for clients of Mick Kent's Cranbourne stable.

The four-year-old recorded the third win of her six start career at the weekend when she claimed top honours in the Gr.3 Epona Stakes.
