Central districts horseman Gary Vile has genuine prospects of a black type double at opposite ends of the island in the coming days.

The Awapuni trainer has the in-form Jacksstar in Thursday's Gr.1 Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup at Ellerslie while stablemate Rock On is a leading hope in the Listed Lincoln Farms New Zealand St Leger at Trentham on Saturday.

Jacksstar is a proven two-miler with success in the Chalmers Premier preceding his runner-up finish in the Gr.3 Wellington Cup. Last time out, he came on generously from the tail of the field for sixth in the Gr.2 Avondale Cup.

"I was very happy with his run," Vile said. "He got further back than we wanted, but he ran home well and his sectionals were good.

"I'm pretty happy with him and a Dead 6 or Slow 7 track would be spot on. I can't get him any better – he's super fit so we just need a bit of luck on the day."

Vile echoed similar sentiments when discussing the prospects at Trentham of Rock On, a horse he considers will be a genuine feature cups contender next season.

"With the blinkers back on and a clear run I think he's going to be a huge chance," he said.

Despite an unfortunate habit of missing the kick, Rock On has been in the money in each of his last 10 starts.

Most recently, Vile took the blinkers off the four-year-old when he finished fourth in the St Leger Trial at Otaki.

"He jumped out better, but he wandered around a bit so he'll have the blinkers back on to keep him a bit more focussed," he said.
