Roger James isn’t about to rush into immediate plans for Von Tunzelman despite an impressive win at Matamata last Saturday.

The Cambridge trainer has bided his time with the four-year-old son of Zabeel who raced away with the Listed Marks Ewen & Associates Kaimai Stakes.

“I’ve got a couple of options but I’ll wait for a few more days before deciding what to do,” said James. “He’s come through the race well and within two of three days he’ll be bouncing again.”

Von Tunzelman took his record to four wins and five placings from 10 starts and has been given eight rating points for his latest win, taking his rating to 88.

Michael Coleman picked up the ride on Von Tunzelman after Leith Innes was unable to make his carded 53kg and he was always travelling like a winner.

After settling fifth-last, Von Tunzelman was worked off the fence near the 800 and ranged up widest on the home turn. He let down strongly to score a half-length win over Fanatic.

“On his work last Tuesday I would have been disappointed if he hadn’t won,” said James. “He won it well and broke the track record.”
