‘Not here to mentor him': Supercars champ's brutal reality check for 19yo rookie teammate

Taking up the vacant seat left by Supercars legend Jamie Whincup is no enviable task.

Add in the fact that the man replacing arguably the greatest driver in the sports’ history is a 19-year-old who is yet to race a full season at the highest level before, and you’ve got the perfect storm for sky-high expectations.

Heck, even Supercars Hall of Famer Mark Skaife described the scenario as “the most anticipated debut for a rookie of this type since (Craig) Lowndes in ‘96.”

But Broc Feeney is no normal 19-year-old.

When asked if he feels any shred of pressure about taking over from Whincup, Feeney cooly told foxsports.com.au: “No, not really.”

Why?

“I put enough expectation on myself.”

After all, this is a young man who won the Kumho Tyre Super3 Series as a fresh-faced 17-year-old in 2019 and won the Dunlop Super2 Series in 2021 before deservedly earning the call-up to the highest level for 2022.

If Feeney is indeed feeling any shred of pressure, then he’s done an outstanding job of hiding it.

Feeney is with Triple Eight Racing Engineering for the upcoming season, the team that won last year’s Team’s Championship.

Sure, there might be expectations within the team to win the same prize again.

But on an individual basis, there’s a collective sense that the 2022 year is all about learning his craft among the best drivers that Australia has to offer.

“It’s just about doing the best I can, to be honest,” Feeney said.

“There’s not a set number for me.

“I want to be racing at the front, I want to be winning races, and hopefully one day win a championship.

“There’s no timeline on that for me.

“That’s just get in, work as hard as I can until I get there.

“Who knows how long that’s going to take, but I’m not going to stop till I get there.”
