Best of British and Irish weekly round up

This weekend saw the return of the Shergar Cup at Ascot , the much loved annual Jockeys teams event was put on hold last year due to COVID, this year it was the Ladies team captained by Hayley Turner who were successful with Nicola Currie stealing the show as she took home the Silver Saddle as the competitions leading rider

Elsewhere on Saturday there were a pair of Group 3 events contested and both were claimed by in form Andrew Balding stable, At Newmarket it was Majestic Glory (Frankel) who came out on top in the Sweet Solera Stakes for the 2yo Fillies while at Haydock 3yo Colt Foxes Tales (Zoffany) took down his older rivals to Scpre the Rose of Lancaster Stakes over 1m2f.

As highlighted prior to the weekend it was the Juveniles turn to take centre stage on Sunday with the running of the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes, it was English raider Ebro River (Galileo Gold) trained by Hugo Palmer who took the honours giving jockey Shane Foley back to back the wins in the race. It was a first Group 1 winner for first season sire Galileo Gold, Himself a Dual Group 1 winner also in the care of Hugo Palmer, the main race on the undercard was the Group 3 Phoenix sprint taken out by the races 2019 winner Gustavus Weston (Equiano)

Earlier in the week Dermot Weld unleashed his stable star Tarnawa (Sharmardal) for the first time in 2021, a triple Group1 winner last season Tarnawa made light work of the Group 3 Ballyroan Stakes in her first run since her Breeders Cup win in November. A winner of the Prix De L’Opera on Arc day last year, all roads now point to the big dance itself come the first Sunday in October.
