Former New Zealand galloper Patrick Erin is on the cusp of starting in the Gr.2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday, but needs one scratching to make the field.

Trainer Chris Waller was pleased with his first-up performance over 1400m at Rosehill earlier this month where he made up ground late to finish sixth.

However, Waller thinks a start in Saturday’s feature is important for the seven-year-old’s spring campaign, which could include a tilt at the Gr.1 Melbourne Cup (3200m).

“It will be disappointing if he can’t get a run,” he said. “He’s come back in really good shape and ran a really good race first-up.

“He’s in for a good preparation, obviously the further the better, but this is an important stepping stone, so hopefully he gains a start.”

The son of Gallant Guru has also been impressing his former trainer Brian Anderton, who prepared Patrick Erin, along with his son Shane, to win 10 starts in New Zealand, including the Listed Riverton Cup (2147m).

“He had a very encouraging run the other day and it was a big run in the Sydney Cup,” Anderton said.

“He got a long way back and made up a lot of ground. His last run over 1400m at Rosehill was pretty impressive, but he is capable of doing that, he’s a smart sort of horse.

“He can run a good 1600m, he’s up to it.”

Closer to home, Anderton said multiple stakes winner Tommy Tucker will return to the stable in the coming weeks and will likely be aimed towards defending his title in the Gr.3 White Robe Lodge Weight For Age (1600m).

“Tommy is just back in and is being worked on the farm at the moment and will be back in the stable in the next couple of weeks,” he said.

“We’ll probably have a go at the White Robe again and some of those races at Christchurch in the autumn.”
