A daring front-running ride aboard Choysa has landed Kate Walters her first winner at Flemington.

Choysa - Darryl Sherer

Choysa got out to a lead, estimated to be 20 lengths in the middle stages of the Saturday's Trevor Clarke Handicap (2500m), defying the chasing pack in the run home.

Sent off a $12 chance, Choysa ran out a 2-3/4 length winner from the $4 favourite Lycurgus, with Falago ($7.50) 2-1/4 lengths away third.

"Last start I drew barrier one and didn't jump well," Walters said.

"I was in behind other horses and he got pulling really hard and I had nowhere to go so today I needed to get him into his own rhythm and let him relax underneath me.

"If you start fighting on his mouth, he'll beat you every time as he's too big and strong."

Walters said she had no idea how far she was in front of the chasing pack going into the home turn and didn't want to go looking over her shoulder.

"I got beaten as an apprentice at Manangatang doing that one day so that's something I don't ever do," she said.
