Ciaron Maher is hoping Aloisia can provide him with a third victory in the Gr.1 VRC Oaks (2500m).

Aloisia - Darryl Sherer

The Caulfield trainer first won the classic in 2014 with Set Square and again the following year with Jameka and he believes the New Zealand-bred daughter of Azamour can follow suit.

Aloisia opened her Oaks campaign on her home track on Saturday and the stable were more than happy with her effort for fifth over 1400m.

“She was desperately unlucky down the straight,” assistant trainer Dave Eustace said. “She stepped a little slow, rustiness I think.

“Mick [Dee] was keen to get cover and she switched off well, which was good going forward because we feel she'll get out to a good trip.”

Aloisia placed in one of her two juvenile starts for Matamata trainer Jason Price before she was sold to clients of Maher’s stable and was subsequently runner-up in the Gr.1 J. J. Atkins (1600m) during the Queensland winter carnival.
